Gatlander was the first officer onboard the U.S.S. Canberra (SCG-2008) under the command of Commodore Greene during Operation Red Dirt.
He assisted in the defense of the ship during the initial Dakota fighter attack, and following orders from Greene ordered Captain Stark via Lieutenant-Commander James Sears of the U.S.S. Hammer (SDD-1114) to investigate an unknown object near the last known position of the U.S.S. Asimov (SDX-6152).
Gatlander attempted to assist in controlling gunnery screens for the Canberra when the Dakota ‘Strike Force Reinager’ jumped in on top of the Canberra’s invasion group, however this proved futile as the Canberra was struck by an enemy torpedo which detonated its Plasma Armament Reactor room igniting the entire ship. Gatlander along with Greene and all personnel aboard the Canberra perished.
