Matt ‘Red’ Groenan was grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in a little town called Varity, five miles north of Vancouver.
Red was often the subject of an abusive step-father in his early years before running away from home at age seventeen, he lied about his age and enlisted in the Army.
Red did his basic training and was assigned to the 5th Infantry Division, with 2nd Lieutenant Ender as his platoon commander.
This is where he saw his first combat in the invasion of the Hoyle System.
Red and his squad were firstly involved in securing a Dakota space station and after that were dropped into the invasion of Hoyle Prime itself.
Red would later call this drop the most anti-climatic action he had ever been involved in, hours before the drop the Air Force had launched one of its most devastating bombing campaigns of the war to that point, when Red and his fellow soldiers landed they found the entire surface in ruins as Hoyle Prime’s surface was so dense it was impractical to dig bunkers and basements.
Red’s squad encountered extremely minor resistance and after only two hours they were able to declare victory, the remainder Red’s Platoon however did encounter enemy resistance.
Groenan has mastered a dirty and sometimes dark sense of humour, a trait from his upbringing and also a mechanism to deal with the war, this does not take away from the fact he is one of the most dependable members of the squad if not the entire Platoon.
